Induction hobs typically last around 10 years — shorter than gas, because the power electronics under the glass do the hard work and are the usual failure. They tend to fail electronically rather than mechanically: a dead zone, an error code or a cracked glass top. Ceramic (radiant) hobs share the glass risks with simpler, cheaper electronics.
What decides it
- Cooling — blocked ventilation under the hob cooks the generator boards
- Glass care: dragged cast-iron pans and hard knocks end more hobs than electronics do
- Heavy use of boost settings runs the electronics at their limit
When to replace rather than repair
A cracked glass top or a failed generator board is rarely economic to fix outside warranty; touch controls and individual zone sensors sometimes are.
