How long does a gas hob last?
Typical
15 years
Range
12–17 years
Gas hobs are simple and last 12–17 years. Igniters and valves are the usual failures, both repairable; safety is the real reason old hobs retire — flame-failure devices on modern hobs are worth the upgrade alone.
What decides it
- Keeping burner caps and igniters clean and dry
- Any gas work must be done by a registered engineer — DIY is illegal in the UK and most of Europe
When to replace rather than repair
If a pre-2010 hob without flame-failure protection needs any paid repair, replace it.
Typical ranges from manufacturer guidance and industry surveys — individual machines vary with use and care. General information, not advice on a specific appliance.
